The Adrian Blackhawks traveled to Freeman Friday night to take on the Cass-Midway Vikings. The annual match-up usually is a hard fought game evenly played despite the record. This year both teams came in with identical records. Each team had lost their first game before rebounding the second week.
This year's game started out on Adrian's side. The Blackhawks received he kick to start the game and moved the ball well but the drive stalled. The Blackhawks were forced to punt but received a lucky break when the punt bounced off the helmet of the Viking return man and was recovered by Adam Cochran. Adrian was not able to capitalize on the fresh set of down, but cashed in when returning one of Midway's punts a short time later. Adam Cochran, with ten seconds left in the first quarter, received a punt on the 40 yard line. He returned the punt to the right side of the field, jumped over a Viking defender and raced down the sideline for the first points of the game. The extra point was good by Cochran for a 7-0 lead after one quarter.
Blake Mincks put Midway on the board with a 16 yard run with 7:10 remaining in the second quarter. The Vikings did not utilize a kicker, opting to go for two after each touchdown. Their first attempt was a failed run. Adrian led 7-6. The Blackhawks stretched the lead to 14-6 on a 35 pass from Gage Steen to Zak Dabney and Cochran kick.
Momentum swung back to the Vikings two minutes later when Jarett Jurgeson broke a couple of tackles and rambled 28 yards to paydirt. Mincks hauled in a pass from Luke Boyer to tie the score heading into halftime. The teams battled it out the third quarter. Midway was able to take the lead on a 49 yard by Boyer with 8:46 to go in the game and would not relinquish the lead. The Midway Vikings won the contest 20-14.
"The kids provided a great effort tonight," said Head Coach Matt Cochran. "With the week we have had, these guys gave it everything. Ryan Baker did well in providing some leadership when we needed it. We had a few kids have to step in, and they did a pretty decent job. We struggled offensively to move the ball. That is something we are going to have to get fixed. Defensively wasn't too bad except for a couple plays. I thought we were alright for 3 1/2 quarters. We just couldn't finish the 4th. Don't get me wrong, we were all disappointed in the loss, but we are still in a position to win conference and possibly districts. We have Rich Hill next week, and they have some athletes. I don't care what their record is. They are going to come in with some fire because it's Adrian. We are going to have to be focused and ready."
Adrian travels to Rich Hill to take on the Tigers at 7pm. Rich Hill is has a deceiving 0-3 record. The Tigers are a team full of talented players that have yet to put it all together. Last year they were very happy with beating Adrian on the Blackhawks home turf. Beating Adrian would make their season. The Blackhawks must enter the game focused and determined in order to beat Rich Hill. A win for Adrian would help reset their season and set the stage for a possible run at the conference title.
