Stout Defense Key to Lady Blackhawks Victory over Drexel

The Adrian Blackhawks varsity girls team travelled to Drexel to take on the Lady Bobcats.    Fresh in the minds of the Adrian fans was the stinging taste of defeat in the championship game of the Archie Tournament.   What better way for the girls to get a little bit of revenge than to spoil Drexel's senior night.
Adrian fell behind by six in the first quarter but battled back and took the lead.  Adrian led by ten points to start the fourth quarter but found themselves down by one with five minutes left to play.
From then on out it was a back and forth game until Malory Moles made what would be the game winning basket with time still on the clock.   Drexel got the ball back and called time with 4.4 seconds on the clock to devise one final play.   Jacy Bolton had taken control of Bobcat offensive push and that helped Drexel get back into the game.   This final play Bolton was used as a decoy to free up another Bobcat shooter to hit a game winning three at the buzzer.  The shot fell short and the Blackhawks left the court as victors by a score of 46-44.
Adrian's defense was stellar tonight.  Many times the Bobcats were bewildered and confused.  The Blackhawks capitalized off of turnovers caused by Drexel because the Bobcats simply didn't know what to do next.
The whole team put out a fantastic effort.   Bailey Reed, however, stood out as she was given the daunting task of guarding Bolton.   Bolton has an offer to play division one college basketball at George Mason next fall.   Adrian knew they couldn't stop her from scoring but the task for Reed was to slow her down.   Reed had help from her teammates.   The team left one Bobcat unattended and dropped back to put as many people between the ball and Bolton.
The defensive strategy coupled with Bailey Reed's performance held Bolton in check for the most part until the fourth quarter.  If the Bobcat shooter sinks the three like she had done three other times in the ballgame we are talking about another heartbreaking loss brought on by the play of a fantastic competitor.   Instead, we are basking in the afterglow of revenge for the loss at Archie.
Adrian heads to Rich Hill this Friday to take on the Rich Hill Tigers.   The Blackhawks have beaten the Tigers twice this year but Rich Hill has managed to beat Drexel so the girls will have to remain in top form to close out the WEMO schedule with a win.
