Friday night Adrian travelled to Drexel to take on the Bobcats. The Blackhawks were coming off a humiliating 26-0 defeat against Butler while Drexel was flying high atop the WEMO standings after defeating the Appleton City Bulldogs 22-6 in the opening week.
The games started for both teams the way it ended for each the previous week. Adrian's offense fizzled and Drexel broke a long touchdown to take the early lead. This week it would be a different story for each team to end the game. Adrian matched Drexel's score with a sustained drive that ended with a 6 yard touchdown run by Logan Harris with 5:16 to play in the first quarter. Logan took the pigskin around the right side and did a magnificent dive toward the pylon stretching out to find paydirt. Dylan Novovesky provided the eventual game winning point with an extra point kick that split the uprights.
The Blackhawks were staggered to start the game were able to keep their heads about them. Adrian did receive a lucky break when Drexel broke what appeared to be another busted play touchdown but Logan Harris was able to chase down the Bobcat running back and force a fumble at the goal line. Adrian recovered the fumble for a touchback. Adjustments were made and very few tackles missed by the defense the rest of the game.
Adrian's defense protected the lead while the offense continued to find its identity. Adrian needed to score before the half since Drexel was going to receive the ball first in the second half. With less than 20 seconds to play in the half Hunter Steen found fellow sophomore Gavin Reed in the flats with a nice pass that turned into a 19 yard catch and run for the touchdown with just four seconds till halftime. Novovesky was good on another extra point.
Adrian had played tough defense since giving up the early touchdown but was prone to the big play. Reed's touchdown gave Adrian much needed breathing room and most likely was the play that broke the spirits of the Drexel Bobats.
After halftime it was all Adrian. Heach Coach Matt Cochran and his assistants made even more adjustments the team executed to near perfection in the third quarter. Zach Shannon put the Blackhawks back on the board with a 26 yard td run. Novovesky tacked on the extra point with 8:23 to play in the period. Adrian forced Drexel to punt on their next possession. Zach Shannon took the first play from scrimmage trough a hole created by his offensive line and raced 73 yards to the end zone.
For a team not known for their size or speed Adrian was going a fantastic job of blowing up the Bobcat backfield on defense and running past Drexel defenders on offense. Adrian scored once more when Hunter Steen scored on an 18 yard run. Novovesky put the finishing touch on the scoring with another successful extra point attempt.
With time running down and defeat imminent Drexel attempted a fake punt with 8:23 in the ball game. Senior Tanner Pitts read the play correctly stepping in front of the intended target for the interception. Pitts returned it to the 40 yard line. Drexel would not pose any real threat the remainder of the game.
Adrian gave up six quick points to start the game but scored 34 unanswered points in the rout. The resiliency and football intelligence of this year's team really put them in great position to win the game. There were very few penalties for the Blackhawks. There were so many aspects of the game that Adrian played well at that a person could not single out any one particular player as the star of the game.
The offensive and defensive line rarely make the headlines and many watching the game don't see the impact these guys have on the game outside of the end result of each play. But they played a really good game. Even the kick off specialist was putting the Bobcats deep in their own territory to start drives after we had scored. Adrian's coaching staff had a great game as well. It was evident they had studied film and put together a good game plan. The adjustments made at halftime allowed the team to put up 20 third quarter points.
'Just a fantastic team effort tonight" said Head Coach Matt Cochran. "The kids showed a lot of heart after last week. We finally got the running game going in the third quarter, and that broke open the game. We came ready to play tonight, and it showed. The team showed great resiliency after we fell behind early. I'm so proud of these kids. However, we have to turn our focus on Midway, our next opponent. They are coming into our house undefeated. This game should have a huge WEMO Conference impact, Get out and support your Blackhawks this Friday!"
Adrian hosts the Midway Vikings Friday night. Midway sits alone at the top of the WEMO standings after beating Archie last Friday 22-14. They beat Osceola in the opening week 36-13. Midway week has always been the biggest week of the year for the Adrian Blackhawks. Not only are they the team's biggest rival but a victory over the Vikings would put Adrian in control of it's own destiny to secure the WEMO conference title. This may only be the third game of the year and second in-conference but it is by far the biggest game of the season for the Blackhawks. They will have to play even better to come out victorious.
