The Adrian Blackhawks played host to the Rich Hill Tigers in varsity football Friday night. It was a sloppy game but Adrian escaped with a one point victory.
The Blackhawks scored first in the game on 24 yard run to paydirt by Zach Shannon. The Tigers answered with an 85 yard kickoff return for a touchdown by Jacob Querry. The extra point was no good. Adrian took the lead a second time on Zach Shannon's 34 yard touchdown run with 7:37 to play in the second quarter. Dylan Novovesky connected on his first extra point but missed on his second attempt. Rich Hill tied the game on a Dalen Lewis 21 yard touchdown pass from Taron Mumma. Myles Becker was successful on his second extra point attempt.
Momentum was on Rich HIll's side at that point until Adrian put together a sustained drive that culminated with a diving touchdown by sophomore quarterback Hunter Steen with just :06 to play until halftime. Novovesky's extra point was good giving Adrian a 20-13 score headed into the half. Adrian made it interesting before half by successfully recovering the onside kick. Adrian had one play to try to score but the pass fell incomplete.
That would be all the scoring the Blackhawks would get but, fortunately, it was all they would need. Each team's defense would bend but not break in the second half and then took advantage of turnovers from the offense. Rich Hill scored with 6:27 in the ballgame. Instead of going for two and the win the Tigers elected to go for the extra point and a tie. However, a bad snap and an awkward attempt spelled doom for Rich Hill's extra point. It would end up being the difference in the ball game.
Adrian fumbled 7 times in the ball game losing 4 of them. Rich Hill had their share of turnovers with four interceptions but still had a chance to eek out a victory. A touchdown or field goal would have won the ballgame for the Tigers but Pitts stepped up to make the play and save the game by intercepting a pass with little time on the clock. All Adrian had to do was line up in the victory formation and take a knee to secure the win.
Adrian featured a new face in the backfield. Due to Logan Harris knee injury senior Connor Pruitt was reassigned his offensive duties and became a running back for the night. Pruitt ran the ball hard and was very difficult to bring down. His downfield running and effort helped him top the 100yd mark rushing. His performance was very blue collar. No touchdowns but ran the ball with purpose and desire. One can only imagine there was an old ball coach in the stands smiling at Pruitt's style.
"It wasn't very pretty tonight" said head coach Matt Cochran. "But a win is a win. Way too many mistakes on offense. You are not going to win many games fumbling the ball 7 times. Our defense played well most of the night. Only allowing 7 rushing yards is pretty good. It was a close game, but it didn't have to be. Our mistakes came at the most crucial times. We have Archie this week, and I don't care what their record is. They've played some good teams. Coach Toschi will have them up and ready to play. We need to come out and show some fire. Plan to take the short trip to Archie Friday and support your Blackhawks."
