The Adrian Blackhawks defeated the Jasper Eagles 21-13 Friday night in the first round of district play. Adrian got up three touchdowns before stumbling a bit late in the game to make it closer on the scoreboard than it actually was.
Adrian's first score of the night came after a nice interception by sophomore Dakota Harris and finalized on a one yard dive to paydirt by his older brother, Logan. Dakota stepped in front of a Jasper pass and, after bobbling it a little, scrambled for a decent return setting up the short run by Logan.
Logan Harris accounted for all of Adrian's touchdowns on the night. Late in the second quarter he scored on a 4 yard run. He cemented the win with a pick-6 with just :51 to play in the third quarter. Noah Koehler was a perfect 3 for 3 on extra points.
Jasper managed to make the game interesting in the fourth quarter. A couple of broken coverages allowed them to score on pass plays of 37 and 20 yards. It was too little, too late at that time. Adrian was able to hold on for the victory.
"The kids really came out and played hard tonight" said head coach, Matt Cochran. "They played with a lot of emotion, and that translated to good play on the field. Defensively, I thought we were really good for 3 1/2 quarters. We made a few mistakes in the fourth quarter which could have really cost us. However, the kids kept fighting through the adversity. I'm very proud of these guys. We have Lockwood next week, and they will be pretty good. We need to play well to keep our season going."
Adrian travels to Lockwood Friday night to take on the Tigers. Lockwood is a very good team with a 7-2 record. They were upset by Jasper in the last game of the regular season but that was after losing a key player on the team due to a knee injury. They fell behind early to Liberal by two touchdowns in their first district game but came together as a team and beat Liberal handily 48-28.
Adrian will need to stay focused and continue to improve in order to get past Lockwood for a chance to claim the district title against the winner of the Midway/Drexel game. One thing is for certain. After seeing the drive and determination by the seniors the last several weeks fans can expect to see them play their hearts out.
