Two undefeated teams showed up at the George Bruto Athletic Complex Friday night with eyes on a conference title that a win would almost guarantee. One would leave dejected and the other was the Adrian Blackhawks.
Adrian hosted the Archie Whirlwinds in a game with huge conference ramifications. The Blackhawks came into the contest with a 4-0 record while Archie was 2-2 but each team was undefeated in conference play with non-conference losses to a good Crest Ridge team and state-ranked Lockwood Tigers. Adrian came out fired up. They kicked off the to Archie and met the Whirlwind return man with a thundering hit. It would set the tone for yet another hard-nosed contest between the teams.

Each team took turns stuffing drives. Adrian gave Archie the first chance to take the lead but held off a scoring threat that had reached inside the 10 yard line. After the Blackhawks possession they were forced to punt. The punt sailed out of bounds, giving Archie great field position that they soon capitalized on. Their extra point attempt failed giving them an early 6-0 lead. The Whirlwinds burned two timeouts in that short drive. That gives you an indication of how important it was to get something out of the drive. In last year's game Archie failed on three different drives at the goal line. Adrian would win that game in overtime for an instant classic.
After the teams traded possession, Archie punted the ball down to Adrian’s 10 yard line. Another failed drive would give the Whirlwinds great field position with a chance to get another score. However, the offensive line and Cooper Mead would have nothing of it. Mead was provided a big hole to run through, hit the seam and was off the the races. Noah Koehler’s extra point was good and just like that the Blackhawks were in charge of this ball game.
The Blackhawks scored again on a Hunter Steen 2 yard dive to paydirt. Koehler’s attempt was good, padding the Adrian lead. Neither team would find the endzone the rest of the time but the game was exciting nonetheless due to some spirited play between the two teams that led to some brief eruptions of emotion. Archie made things interesting by putting a good passing drive together in the final seconds that could have given them a shot at tying the ballgame. An incomplete pass as time all but expired had fooled the band into playing the school fight song only to find out the referee stopped the clock with just enough time for one more snap. Archie threw the ball one last time into the endzone. Three Whirlwind receivers were there along with four Adrian defenders. Cooper Mead snagged the pass and secured a Blackhawk victory.
Adrian travels to Appleton City this week. A Blackhawk victory would bring the WEMO Conference title home for the first time in several years. Appleton City defeated Adrian last year in convincing fashion but are struggling this year. Needless to say the Bulldogs would love for nothing more to play the spoiler role and keep Adrian from claiming the title on their turf. After the teams traded possession, Archie punted the ball down to Adrian’s 10 yard line. The Blackhawks must come out ready to play and show everybody what they are capable of when they have their minds set on victory. As well as their defense has played and how well their offense can perform when pressed, things should go Adrian’s way.
Coach's Comments:
This was a huge conference win for us. I thought defensively we played well. We had our backs against the wall most of the night. Archie ran over 70 plays and we only gave up one score. Offensively, we struggled, especially in the second half. We will get better, though. A win is a win. We have Appleton City this week, and they are the only thing between us and an outright conference championship. They will give us their best game. We need to come prepared.
