Blackhawks Blow Away Whirlwinds

Devin Darby is the recipient of good blocking by Connor Pruitt, Devin Darby and Brohde Bennett.

While our fellow WEMO schools, Drexel and Midway, dealt with a tornado that disrupted their match-up Friday night, Adrian was dealing with Whirlwinds of Archie.  Dangerous winds from an EF-1 tornado damaged the scoreboard and blew bleachers onto the football field in Freeman.  Players and fans attending the game took shelter in the basement of the Cass-Midway school.

The Adrian Blackhawks and Archie Whirlwinds game was delayed for about an hour due to lightning strikes in the area.   Adrian was up 6-0 on a 20 yard Gage Steen touchdown pass to Hunter Harris when lightning struck well north of the complex but close enough for the game to be delayed until the inclement  weather passed through the area.

The Blackhawks did not waste any time once the game resumed.   Junior Zach Shannon scored on a one yard run.  Adam Cochran's extra point kick was good, giving Adrian a 13-0 lead at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter was fairly quiet until two minutes to go until halftime.   The Blackhawks struck paydirt three times in the final minutes of the first half.   The first score was on a Gage Steen 77 yard run featuring broken tackles and a defender badly fooled by one of Steen's moves.    Adrian got the ball back a short time later.    With 54 seconds to go Devin Darby ran it in from 22  yards out.  Cochran's kick was good.    On the first play from scrimmage Logan Harris stepped in front of an Archie pass and raced 20 yards for the touchdown.   Harris read the play so well that he was at full speed when he intercepted the pass and left the Whirlwinds wondering what just happened.

Archie tried to get back in the contest on a Kale Wheeler two yard run.  Colby Fenton split the uprights on the extra point.   Hunter Harris answered that score by finding the endzone for the second time on the night.  This time it was from the defensive side of the ball.   Harris intercepted the pass then bulldozed his way to the endzone dragging players along with him.

After that score the Adrian junior varsity squad came in for the fourth quarter.   A job well done by the starters meant it was time to get the younger guys some valuable playing time.  The game ended with the Blackhawks on the good side of a 32-6 score.

This game was the type of game where there were many things to head home feeling good about. Several players had great games.   Senior Devin Darby intercepted two passes and recovered a fumble on top of his rushing touchdown.   The Harris brothers made their mark with a pair of pick-6's.   Eighteen Blackhawks recorded tackles in the game.

"Really a pretty good effort all-around tonight," said Head Coach Matt Cochran.  "I thought the defense played tough, especially in the first half. Getting two defensive scores was huge. Plus we had 6 takeaways.  We got started early offensively tonight which has been our weak point. The last 2:00 minutes before half was the turning point in the game. We went from being ahead 13-0 to being ahead 32-0 in that time. Individually, our linebackers played big tonight. Hunter Harris, Logan Harris, and Brohde Bennett were our catalysts. Devin Darby having 3 takeaways by himself was important, too. We have to focus on Appleton City this week. They have a monster of an offense. They have put up a lot of points. We are going to have to be on our game to get a win."

Adrian travels to Appleton City Friday night to take on the Bulldogs.  The Bulldogs are averaging, according to MaxPreps, 225 yards rushing per game rushing and about 150 passing.  Adrian is averaging around 250 yards on the ground but less than 40 through the air.   Appleton City has given up a lot of points this year.   The Blackhawks will have to find a way to limit the passing yards by the Bulldogs and continue to put their own points on the board.

Gage Steen with plenty of room to run.

Pregame coin flip.  Archie won the toss and elected to defer to the second half.

Devin Darby with his first interception of the night.  He added another plus a fumble recovery later in the ball game.
