Adrian R-3 Fifth and Seventh Graders Hold Pajama Drive

Adrian R-III students in Erin Hooper's 5th grade reading class and Stacey Evans' 7th grade reading class recently participated in the Scholastic Reading Club Great Bedtime Story Pajama Drive.  The 5th graders collected 30 pairs of pajamas while the 7th grade collected 19 pairs of new pajamas and $20 in donations for program last month.   Scholastic will match each donation with a new book.  Their donations will stay right here in the Kansas City area.

The pajama drive is a philanthropic classroom program offered through Scholastic Reading Club that aims to teach kids the value of giving and the power of reading.   Classrooms across America have collected and donated nearly 350,000 pajamas since 2009.  Scholastic Reading Club has more than matched those numbers with a book donation to the program that nears 7000,000 during that same period.

Pajama Program distributes new pajamas and new books to children in need from infants to age 17.  These children live in various situations including group homes, shelters, and temporary housing facilities.  The children are often shuffled from one place to another.  Many are abandoned, abused, or neglected.  Most of these children have never enjoyed the simple comfort of having a mother or father tuck them in at bedtime with warm, clean pajamas and a bedtime story.  "Giving the children new pajamas of their own gives them a sense of optimism in how they are perceived by the outside world--a world they feel has shunned them."
