School is Back in Session--Keep Safety 1st!!

Safety is not something we 'just' talk about, we live and breathe it.

With the school year about to start, we think the following tips for school buses and our children are important:

-- Teach your kids about school bus safety.

Remind them to stand at least three giant steps back from the curb as the bus approaches and to climb the steps one person (and one step) at a time. It's also a good reminder to wait for the bus to come to a complete stop before approaching the bus.

-- Teach your kids about crossing the street.

Remind kids to never walk behind the bus - always walk in front. Have them take five giant steps in front of the bus, make eye contact with the bus driver, and only cross when they indicate it's safe. Kids should look left, right, then left again before attempting to cross the street.

-- Remind yourself to slow down in school zones.

This sounds like a no-brainer, but we all need to stay alert and look for kids who may be trying to get to or from school. We should also stay alert if driving near a school bus. When their lights are flashing, the bus is either preparing to stop, or already stopped, which means kids are getting on or off the bus.

Commit to giving up the phone while driving and encourage others to take the same pledge.

I wish you a safe start to the school year.
