Early Valiant Effort as Blackhawks Fall to Fair Grove

The character of a team can be exposed in many different ways.  Teams with great success can crumble under pressure and be sore losers in defeat.  Other teams who fight for every point and every victory can travel over two hours to a ball game that nobody gives them a chance of winning.

Adrian, no doubt, fits the latter.  The Blackhawks made the two hour trip to Fair Grove to take on the Eagles for their last game of the regular season.   Fair Grove came into the game 9-0 ranked 7th in class 2.   Adrian came in with a 5-3 record and a clear understanding that it would take an major upset to defeat the heavily favored Fair Grove Eagles.

Adrian fell behind midway through the opening quarter when a Fair Grove drive fizzled and ended with a 22 yard field goal.  The Blackhawks ended the quarter with a 4 yard run by Hunter Steen.   Adrian showed in the first quarter great heart and determination and had a 6-3 lead to show for it.

The Blackhawks maintained the 6-3 lead midway through the second quarter before the wheels came off.  Fair Grove score the next 8 touchdowns to rout the Adrian 60-13.    Zach Shannon found paydirt with 5:50 to play  Noah Koehler's extra point was good to end the scoring on the night.

"Pretty rough game tonight" said head coach Matt Cochran. "We knew going in that they were good. I'll give our kids credit, though. We had the lead midway through the second quarter with the #7 team in Class 2. Eventually they were just too big for us. Our kids kept fighting, and sometimes that is all you can ask. As we look ahead, our district can by won by anyone. It's wide open. If our kids work hard and stay focused, that is within our grasp. We play Jasper Friday at home. We need a big crowd there. Come support your Blackhawks as they try to work their way to a district title."

The team showed great poise, great heart and Blackhawk Pride traveling to take on a larger undefeated school.  Not only did they score in the ballgame but they led for 25% of the game.  Playing a team of Fair Grove's caliber could actually help the team as the head into district play.

Adrian hosts the Jasper Eagles Friday, October 21st at the George Bruto Athletic Complex in the first round of the district 3 tournament.   Jasper upset the Lockwood Tigers last week and will come into the game with confidence.  The Blackhawks made it through the Fair Grove game without any injuries and will be ready to exact revenge on their next opponents.

Judging by the way the team refused to give in last week and the utter dismantling of Sherwood on Senior Night the seniors on this team do not want to leave anything on the field.  Look for them to come out fired up ready to play the most physical game of the year.
