Second in State; First in Our Hearts

Proud of our Lady Blackhawks!  School history has been made!

My apologies for a late story but it's better late than never, right?   Plenty of pictures have been posted, and judging by the number of Blackhawks fans at the games I venture to say there are very few who weren't there to witness history unfold in real time.

The Lady Blackhawks finished their historic run in basketball with a second place finish to the Skyline Tigers in the title game.   Skyline took the lead early and controlled things the whole game. Although the outcome may never have been in doubt, you couldn't tell by the girls' intensity on the court.  True to Adrian's personality, the Lady Blackhawks played hard the entire game and the cheerleaders and student section were as energetic and supportive at the final buzzer as they were the opening tipoff.

The AHS cheerleaders showed incredible spirit during the big game and this season!

This season, the Lady Blackhawks suffered just two defeats and both came at the hands of the Lady Tigers.  There were 120+ teams in Missouri Class 2 basketball and only one team was able to defeat them.  Skyline had spanked Adrian by 50 points in their first loss.  Losing the title game by 27 points, while technically a blow-out, was a small victory as Adrian had improved over the course of the season.

Skyline was clearly the best team in Class 2 this year and their fans celebrated with glee. But there was no doubt the Lady Blackhawks made the community proud.   Through teardrops and hugs there was an overwhelming sense of gratitude and appreciation for the run no Adrian team had experienced since the State Football Championship in 2002.

Starters Jenna Shipley, Sheldon Tallman and Anna Walley are emotional as they come off the court for the last time this season.  For seniors Tallman and Walley, it's their last game in a Blackhawks uniform.

There were so many awards, so many titles this team won this year.  They ran the table in conference play, won the preseason conference tourney and they "played up" when they bypassed the Archie Tournament in favor of the Clinton Tournament where the Lady Blackhawks defeated three Class 4 teams to claim that title as well. To top it off Adrian placed two girls on the All-State team. Congratulations go out to Lauren Shipley and Bailey Reed!

It has been a pleasure covering the team this season.  Witnessing from the viewfinder of a camera the best season any Adrian basketball team has put together has been an honor for me.   I have covered the high school teams for 8 years now.  Each group of kids become your own.  I'm sure the same goes for the fans in the stands.

Thank you, girls, for a great season that won't soon be forgotten.  Thank you for giving the community something it hasn't experienced in many years.  I'm looking forward to next season!
