The Big 99 by Liz Ray

The Big 99

Yes, it was the big day, June 28—the day we celebrated my Aunt Stella’s 99th birthday.
My son Mark, who was visiting from Minneapolis, and I took out from Adrian and headed for Eldon around 8:30 that morning....
We were all meeting at the Mustang Grill in downtown Eldon for this big celebration—all 40 of us.
The meal wasn’t taking place until 1 p.m. so several of us who got there early toured some of the antique and gift shops close by while we waited on the arrival of Aunt Stella.
But at 1 p.m. here she came just as sprightly as ever. She took the seat of honor as we all sang Happy Birthday to her.
There was a lot of fun and visiting going on and Stella was right in the midst of it.
Every so often I have to kid her about her red SUV Chevy Captiva she bought a couple of years or so ago when someone ran into her and totaled her car.
She’s a good driver and enjoys her classy red SUV as she drives to church and to the grocery store and to visit family and friends.
I enjoy my Aunt Stella and learn a lot from her. The other day I called her and in the course of the conversation mentioned itching from chigger bites and she gave me some remedies for that.
She’s good at remembering family details so if any of us want to know anything “just ask Aunt Stella.”
But most of all I appreciate her because she loves the Lord with all her heart and is a woman of great faith and prayer.
Her life is centered in God and in addition to attending church each Sunday she also goes to a weekly Bible study each Wednesday.
At 99 she continues to read and study the Bible and lives by its principles each day.
“Since my youth, O God, you have taught me, and to this day I declare your marvelous deeds.” (Psalm 71:17 NIV)
And yes when I’m 99 I want to be just like my Aunt Stella.
Love in Jesus,
God’s “Aunt Stella-celebrating” servant,
Liz Ray
