Cane Room by Liz Ray

Cane room

Now my bamboo room finally has a twin. After several years of wanting this, I now have a cane room.
Nearly every year for the last few years, I have been saying to Carson, my neighbor who helps me a lot outside, “Carson, let’s make a cane room.”
But seems like every year there was too much other stuff that needed doing that took priority so we never would get around to doing the cane room.
Just this last Monday though I decided forget the other stuff. We’re going to make a cane room.
Now this is a cane patch that is 92 feet in circumference. One of my other neighbors Donna gave me a start years ago and it has expanded enough to hollow it out and make a room inside.
So at 2:55 p.m. Carson started cutting the canes out, first to make an entrance way and then on in to make the room. The room turned out to be 40 feet round, enough space for some chairs and a side table.
He finished cutting the canes at 3:35 p.m.—a fast, rigorous 40 minutes. He would cut them and I would take them out of the cane room out of his way. We worked in tandem—an 80-year old and a 15-year old. Pretty good pair! LOL
Then the next part—carrying the canes to the woods. By that time we were hot and tired but we got them all put on the ‘woods cane pile.”
Now the final task putting hay and leaves on for its natural rug. Again we worked together—Carson doing the hard part, getting the hay off the hay bale and bringing to me and me spreading it out.
Finally at 4:20 p.m. we’re finished—and exhausted. But now I finally have my cane room. Now to get some chairs and a table in it.
Although I put this off for years, there’s one thing I won’t put off and that is spending time with Jesus each day—top priority. And I thank Him for my new cane room since all good things come from Him as James 1:17 NIV says, “Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father…”

Love in Jesus,
God’s “cane room” servant,
Liz Ray
