Finding the House by Liz Ray

It was a spur of the moment decision. After breakfast out on her patio, my sister Katherine suggested why don’t we try to find Grandpa and Grandma Ekstam’s old house. This was our dad’s mom and dad.
Katherine lives in the country near Eugene and Grandma and Grandpa’s house was in the country on the other side of Eugene.
Grandma died in 1965 and Grandpa in 1966 so I hadn’t been to the house or what remained of it for over 50 years.
Katherine had her three great-grandsons visiting her for the week and thought this would be interesting for them. Our sister Lou took part in this adventure also.
We remembered the road going through a section of woods and then out into a field and then more woods. At first we went to a wrong entrance but then got on the right way finally.
We kept walking, not really knowing where we were going. It all looked different from 50 years ago.
Finally the little boys ages 4, 10, and 12 who had gone on ahead found the remains of the house and shouted for us to come on.
The years had taken its toll and only part of the house remained. After awhile I could visualize in my mind’s eye where the different rooms were that we used to play in when we would go see Grandma and Grandpa.
Looking around outside, I found a moss-covered brick on the ground and some interesting-shaped cow bones and decided to take these home as a memento of the day.
Now a very interesting part of the trip. We sisters in our 70’s and 80’s were a little tired after all the walking and now thinking about walking back and carrying my brick and my two cow bones.
Well, all of a sudden, here comes a big flatbed truck out of nowhere. I said to Lou and Katherine, “Has someone been praying?”
It turns out it was Mike, our second cousin, who rents the ground and came down to see who was on the place since he saw a car parked at the entrance.
God is good—all the time! He knew us oldsters needed a ride back as we all climbed onto the flatbed along with the grands.

“I will provide for their needs before they ask…”
(Isaiah 65:24 ICB)

Thanks, God, and thanks, Mike!
