Adrian Starts Season with a big 28-0 over Butler

The 2018 football season got underway for the Adrian Blackhawks with a 28-0 victory over the Butler Bears in Friday night football action.  The defense played well all night long and proved they are a force to be reckoned with this season.  Butler broke a few long plays but were never a real threat to find the endzone.
High school offenses have historically been slower to take off than defenses.   Adrian did find paydirt in the first quarter on a 43 yard touchdown run by senior Cameron Tallman.   Tallman was aided by downfield lead blocking by sophomore Keaton Cook.
Early in the second quarter Butler was facing fourth and long near their own goalline.    Junior Brody Ford bulled over a Butler lineman, extended out his arm and blocked the punt.   There was a scramble for the ball before a Bear fell on it for the safety.   Adrian led 8-0 headed into the half.
The Blackhawks came out on fire the second half.  A long drive was capped off on a 1 yard touchdown plunge by senior James Keating.  Senior Noah Koehler split the uprights on the point after attempt.  Right before the 3rd quarter closed out junior QB Bryant Burkes hit Gavin Reed on a 47 yard touchdown pass.  Koehler's extra point was good extending the lead to 22-0.  Cameron Tallman finished the scoring with a 21 yard run with 3:43 to play in the ballgame.
Adrian had 211 rushing yards on the ground and 47 yards through the air but there were missed opportunities. Once the passing game gets more in sync the increased production will be a big boost. The defense gave up just 30 yards on the ground and 62 via the pass.  Butler's best threat against Adrian was a 35 yard kickoff return and 71 punt return. The Bear running game was all but shut down forcing them into passing the ball.  They found moderate success in that doubling the rushing output.
"Always good to start the season with a win" said head coach Matt Cochran. "Offensively, we really struggled in the first half. We kind of put it together in the second half, though. Offense always takes a little time to mesh in the early part of the year. Defensively, we played really well. We are really pushing the players to be physical, and they were. We have a lot to work on, but the ultimate goal is a win, and we got that tonight."
Adrian has another road game this week when they travel to Liberal to take on the Liberal Bulldogs.  Game time is 7pm.
