Adrian FBLA and VFW host flag retirement ceremony

Colter Schacher is the Adrian Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) sponsor.  Since last school year, Schacher and FBLA have actively supported the Adrian VFW Post #1935.  On National POW/MIA Recognition Day, September 21, 2018, four members of the Adrian VFW retired about a dozen old flags with assistance from several FBLA members.  High school students, teachers and administrators were present for the patriotic ceremony.

Tim Hummel, the grandfather of Adrian Junior Maycie Cunningham, talked with the students about retiring a flag.  From the Veterans Department of Affairs:  When an American flag becomes worn, faded, torn or soiled, it should be retired and replaced with a new flag.  It is recommended to fold the flag in a customary triangle manner.  Place the flag in the fire and while it burns, salute.  Hummel also said that anyone who has a flag to retire can place it in the designated box at the VFW building on Main Street in Adrian.

Hummel pushed each carefully folded retired flag into a fire, followed by a salute as VFW Member Don Arndt read the names of deceased soldiers.  After all flags were retired, Hummel asked for a moment of silence.  The Blackhawks stood quietly, heads bowed.

As the ceremony came to a close, FBLA members and students chose to shake hands with the veterans and thank them for our service. It was a special ceremony for all.  Thank you, Mr. Schacher, for leading the students to respect and appreciate men and women who have worn or are wearing a United States military uniform!
