BLACKHAWK PRIDE STANDS STRONG!--Homecoming 2015

by Michele Burris

In the history of the Adrian Blackhawks, there has been an undeniable pride that carries over from one generation to the next.  As times change, we always think about how it used to be or how we dream it could be.  The reality, from what I witnessed during homecoming week this year, is that Adrian's good old Blackhawk Pride shined brighter than ever!  Black and Gold ran rampant through the school and through the community.  It was absolutely impressive and so much fun!
With AHS Student Council Advisor Megan Weers, STUCO and the students stepped it up in a big way this year.  They brought the Blackhawk spirit alive for homecoming week, and it was so much fun for the students and the whole town!  The seniors and their entrance to the bonfire showed all kinds of crazy pride, that was one of the best moments of homecoming! As the newbies in middle school, the 6th graders had a ton of spirit at the pep rally! The high school football team rocked it with the cheerleaders at the pep rally, that was a hoot! They did awesome!  Four float sites around town brought together each AHS class and their sponsors for several nights of creativity, hard work and a whole lot of memories in the making.  The festivities leading up to the big homecoming football game ended with the beloved homecoming parade.  Main Street was packed with parade watchers!  It was so cool to see people of all ages come together to celebrate Blackhawk Pride.  The parade was led by three wonderful ladies and Adrian teachers who retired just last year:  Rhonda Hamilton, Debbie Slattery and Debbie Still.
Out at the George Bruto Athletic Complex homecoming night, the football team prepared for a victory that would bring home a WEMO Conference title (or co-title).  The band...what can I say...to see the Marching Blackhawks, under the direction of Lauren Moravec, take the field and play the National Anthem choked me up with so much pride I can't even explain it.  At halftime, the band was joined by the AHS cheerleaders, whose well-executed dance routine choreographed by Coach Lesli Lame, to the band's performance of Michael Jackson's Thriller, had the Blackhawks on their feet!
At halftime, announcer Matt Cunningham revealed that the 2015 Homecoming Spirit Stick winner was the senior class.  The winner of the float contest was the Class of 2017, the juniors.  The 2015 King and Queen Candidates were introduced during halftime.  Eight sharp-dressed high school students took the field to wait for the crowning of the King and Queen.  Representing the freshmen were Valencia Diamond and Cameron Tallman.  The Class of 2018, whom I have a bit of biased toward because I've known them since kindergarten or before, looked stunning.  Kaylie Chancellor and Denton Cunningham took their place at mid-field for the sophomores.  The junior class was represented by Riley Valis and Ethan Betherum.  In their final year of high school, seniors Sam Ketcher and Bayler Six represented the Class of 2015.  Sam and Bayler were crowned as the 2015 Adrian High School Homecoming Queen and King.
In a tough first half of football against the Osceola Indians, the Blackhawks took the field in the second half of a scoreless game.  The score remained at zero until late in the 4th quarter when the Indians came up with a touchdown.  With just over six minutes on the clock, the Blackhawks couldn't return the favor and fell short of the conference title by just one touchdown.  Hold your heads high, Blackhawks!!!!  Be proud, your fans sure are!  I know you're disappointed but you have established a momentum that will take Head Coach Matt Cochran and the players and coaches to the next level in conference play next season.  As for the rest of this season, with the exceptional leadership and a team full of hardworking players, a Districts win is more than achievable!   Go Blackhawks!
Some words of gratitude:  To our incredible middle and high school teachers and coaches, thank you so much for making this week absolutely amazing. So many of you spent countless hours helping at float sites, reorganizing practices to accommodate extra things going on, having extra practices/rehearsals for homecoming, and millions of other things!  A great big kudos to the R-III administration. Every single one of them is committed to Blackhawk Pride and it showed this week in a major way!  And last but certainly not least, the Adrian Community is the best ever!!  Thank you for supporting the students and the school time and time again!
