Lady Blackhawks are WEMO Conference Tournament Champs!

The Adrian Blackhawks took the WEMO Conference Tournament by storm bringing back the hardware for the second year in a row. Adrian breezed through the first two games defeating Appleton City and Lakeland then defeated Midway in the championship game.
Adrian's first round matchup was the Lady Bulldogs of Appleton City. Adrian scored all the points needed for victory when they put up 30 points in the opening period of a 58-22 contest. Anna Walley led the scoring with 18 points. Jenna Shipley pulled down 6 rebounds and Bailey Reed had 5 assists.
The Lakeland Vikings were the second round matchup but the outcome was the same. Adrian started out slow scoring 13 points in each of the first two quarters before nearly doubling their score with a point outburst in the third period. Adrian took their foot off the gas in the fourth quarter and cruised to a 59-16 victory. Bailey Reed and Lauren Shipley each had 14 points to lead the offense. Jenna Shipley's five rebounds and Sheldon Tallman's 6 steals led the way for the defense.
The championship game pitted the #1 seed Adrian Blackhawks vs the Lady Vikings of Midway. Just like the first two games Adrian jumped out to an early lead but this time had to hold on to secure the victory. Adrian broke out to 10 point lead after the first quarter but were outscored each of the next two periods. Adrian opened the fourth quarter up four points against a team hungry for an upset. Adrian managed to pad their lead and win by 8 points 55-47.
Jenna Shipley led all scoring with 18 points. Anna Walley had 8 rebounds. The law firm of Shipley, Shipley and Tallman recorded two steals each.
The championship game was a bit of a wake up call for the girls after three blowouts to start the season. The offense was a balanced attack with four girls in double figures. Rebounds, steals and assists were evenly spread out as well. What doesn't show up in the stats book was the tenacious defense of Sheldon Tallman. Tallman has long been known for her ability to harass the ball handler forcing many turnovers and upsetting the rhythm of the offense. In this game, however, one play that stood out to me was a hustling play were she saved a turnover by diving out of bounds for the ball while spinning around to shovel it to an open teammate. It's a play that doesn't show up in the stats but ignites a team to take their play up a notch.
