Blackhawks Baseball Season Comes to Heartbreaking, Yet Inspiring, End

The Adrian Blackhawks Baseball season came to an end today when the Lincoln Cardinals came from behind in the later innings to claim a 10-7 victory and their spot in the final four to be played in O'Fallon next week.

The game started out well for Adrian by getting Lincoln to go three up and three down in the top of the first.  The second and third innings were not as kind as the Cardinals took what seemed to be a commanding 6-0 lead.

Adrian Blackhawk athletic teams this year can be best be described as fighters that never give up and always find a way to answer the bell.  We saw it this year first in football when Adrian won a thriller over Archie in overtime.  We saw it again with the girls basketball team falling behind early in the state championship bracket in Columbia only to dominate the rest of the game.   And we saw it one game prior when the Adrian baseball team came from two five run deficits to upend Marion C. Early High School in the sectional round.

So, even as good as Lincoln has been this year and even though the Cardinals had ten run ruled the Blackhawks earlier in the season there would be no resignation from Adrian Blackhawks.   Adrian stormed back in the bottom of the third inning.  A mixture of walks, hit batters and timely hitting by the boys led to 7 runs.   The Adrian fanbase was in jubilant celebration which echoed the determination being displayed by the fired-up squad.   A stunned Cardinal crowd was in sudden disbelief that their once-invincible team was now in a position to fight for their lives.

Lincoln is a very good team loaded with top end pitching and solid hitters.  But it wasn't easy for them.  The eked out a run here, a run there and eventually regained the lead and extended it to the 10-7 final score.

Adrian may have gone down in defeat but their determination and steadfast belief that they could pull it out led to a very exciting game. This game...this team...this entire class of senior athletes is worthy of being shared with future teams what can happen when you play as a team and never give up.

There is much for this team to be proud of and not a thing to hang their heads about.  They have played the game as a team.  They did the little thing  well.   The could pitch, they could hit and they could field.   Any kid with the love for baseball and dreams of playing high school ball someday has been presented with good role models this year.   One would not be surprised to see young kids be inspired by what they got to witness this year.
