In My Opinion by Don Arndt : The Case of the Squeaky Dryer

The case of the squeaky dryer
“Don, Our GE dryer has been making a loud squeaking sound when it's drying a heavy load
of clothes. As the clothes dry and get lighter the noise isn't so bad.
Last night it had a heavier load than I would like. It was making more noise than usual so I took
out a good portion of the load. I started it back up and it got even worse. I'm afraid of using it
now. What is wrong with it? Thank you, MB”
There are different kinds of noise that a dryer in trouble can make. The good thing is that most
dryers can be saved fairly cheaply. Washer noise can be a real bank account killer, dryers are
cheap. (usually)
So, this squeaking noise is probably one of two things. First choice would be the “glides” that
the drum runs on at the front of the machine. Those glides (two of them) a have a nylon strip
attached to them that support the drum as it turns. When that replaceable strip wears down to the
metal it makes the noise you mentioned. The second possibility would be the belt idler pulley
wore out.
There are other possible causes of course, but that should get you started on your repairs.
Because the change in load size (weight) making a difference, I would bet on the glides. If you
get this fixed before too long, you will save the metal slide brackets. If you keep using it, the
repair will include the brackets and glide strips.
