In MY Opinion: by Don Arndt

Feed the need

August 5th is our 2nd annual “Feed the Need” tractor cruise! Many of the locals are really looking forward to this event again this year for several reasons. Of course it’s a lot of fun, but mainly the cause is really a good one. We gather canned and other non perishable food to give to the Butler food pantry which serves all of Bates County. Actually, three cans of food is part of the entry fee to get to play with the other men and women as we run the approximately 28 mile journey.

Many of the entries will be members of the WMAT&MA based here in Adrian, but all are welcome to participate and we have riders come in from many miles away to enjoy the day. Last year we had 25 tractors and this year we are expecting near 50. Everyone will gather at Frontier Village early Saturday morning August 5th and will depart Frontier Village at 8:30 am after a short driver’s meeting. You can register that morning from 6:30 AM to 8 AM and the entry fee is $35.00 and of course the 3 cans of food.  Before the line of tractors leave, drivers will be given their free commemorative cap. We will arrive back at Frontier Village between noon and 1:00 pm where all drivers will be served a free (wonderful) meal prepared by the WMAT&MA ladies in the Village Center.

The route we will take includes going through the lot in front of the Nursing Home in Adrian, a break stop for snacks and water at Heritage Tractor in Adrian, then we take the service road to Butler where we travel by the nursing home there. We then travel to Butler Family Center for another break for rest/water/snacks before heading back. If you want to watch the parade along any of the route you will see every color of tractor and every age from 70 years old to present including Farmalls, Deeres, Fords, Olivers, Molines and many others. I have chosen my 1953 Model 40 John Deere to ride this year and am expecting it to be as much fun as last year.

If you are not planning on entering and riding yourself, but you feel you want to help the pantry, please join us at Frontier Village Saturday morning and donate food or cash to this cause. We chose August because the summer months are when the pantry normally has fewer donations. It just seems fitting that we use tractors to raise funds, food and awareness for the pantry because farmers have always fed the nation and have always been known for their generosity.  Most of the riders are farmers or have a farm life background. If you want more information, want to donate or participate, please call WMAT&MA Vice President Bob Surber at 816 797 4243.

Last year we gathered 190 lbs of food and this year we have a goal of 300 lbs.
