The Adrian Blackhawks hosted the Drexel Bobcats Friday night at the George Bruto Athletic Complex. It was a beautiful night for football and the team responded accordingly. Adrian won the game handily 27-8 behind a balanced offensive attack that introduced new names to the scoring list.
Adrian again lost the toss and received the ball to start the game as Drexel deferred possession to the second half. Adrian found paydirt with 8:18 to play in the first quarter. Junior running back Cameron Tallman dove in from 2 yards out to give the Blackhawks the early lead. The extra point was no good. Junior James Keating scored just before the quarter came to a close on a one yard touchdown run. The extra point was no good but Adrian lead 12-0. Junior Hunter Steen connected on a 21 yard touchdown pass to Junior Dakota Harris with 7:19 to play in the first half. Steen ran in the two point conversion.
The teams traded possessions in the third quarter. Drexel had a bit of success moving the ball in the fourth quarter. Cole McRoy hauled in a 10 yard pass from Keegan Nichols to put the first points on the board against Adrian this season. Nichols ran in the two point conversion to bring the score to 20-8 Adrian.
The Blackhawks needed to answer the scoring drive to stop the Bobcat's momentum. Adrian would do just that. Drexel, in a attempt to capitalize off their scoring drive, attempted an onside kick. The Bobcats had been assessed a 15 yard unsportsmanlike penalty after their touchdown. Couple that with a failed onside attempt the Blackhawks was gifted with great field position. Hunter Steen made them play on the very next play. Steen took the snap and went around the right side before cutting back across the field. A few broken tackles later Steen found an opening and raced 40 yard for the final touchdown of the night. Noah Koehler, who missed the first week due to a bruised kidney, connected on the extra point capping off the victory for the Blackhawks.
Defensively for the Blackhawks Cameron Tallman led the way with 16 total tackles. James Keating and Dakota Harris were right behind him with 14 and 15 tackles. Keating had the big stick of the night when he stopped the Bobcat runner in his tracks with a firm but legal hit in the first quarter.
People who appreciate kickers and punters may have taken special note of a fine job punting the football by Cameron Tallman. Tallman had three punts a whopping 42.7 yard per punt. His puts weren't the booming variety. Instead, they were cool and calculating as he got maximum roll and put a couple of them inside the 10 yard line. Good smart punting like that coupled with solid defense helped Adrian keep the Bobcats offense at bay.
"This was a good win for us tonight" said head coach Matt Cochran. "We came out pretty fired up and put up 14 points in the first quarter. We got a little complacent in the second half and let Drexel hold the ball for most of it." "These guys are playing hard and getting better every week. We have Midway next week and they are always tough. The records don't matter. It's who wants it more. We go to their place so we need to have a lot of energy. We need to have a good week of practice and be ready to play."
As Cochran mentioned it is Midway week. The game will be played at Cass Midway at 7pm. Adrian is 2-0 on the season. Midway is 0-2 after falling to Archie by a score of 37-0 in week two. If Adrian doesn't take their opponent seriously and prepare accordingly then the Vikings would love nothing more than to spoil the good vibes Adrian may have after promising start to the season.
