Adrian Downs Jasper in Varsity Football Action

Adrian got a very much needed victory over a tough Jasper Eagles team Friday night 40-14.  It was just what the team and followers needed after losing the previous week to the Midway Vikings.
It was very important to see the team come out fired up and aggressive.  It was also imperative that the team score early and often. The offense changed up some personnel and inserted a few more pass plays which kept Jasper on their heels.   On Jasper’s first play from scrimmage they attempted a pass that was intercepted by Hunter Steen and returned it 20 yards..  Adrian took advantage of the turnover on their first play from scrimmage. Gavin Reed took the handoff and raced 15 yards to paydirt.Everything appeared to be going Adrian’s way.  But Jasper’s nex possession was all running plays.  They systematically marched down the field and tied the score on their next possession.
Reed had three touchdowns on the night.   Hunter Steen had two and James Keating closed out the scoring with a four yard run late in the contest.  Noah Koehler converted on four extra points.
This was exactly the game and outcome the team needed to get refocused on the season.   They beat a very good team on the road and looked like the same team that was blowing out weaker opponents early in the season.
The two teams traded another touchdown before Adrian made some defensive adjustments and shut the Eagles down the rest of the game.   Adrian’s second touchdown occurred when Bryant Burkes lined up as a running back. He took the pitch out then launched a pass down the sideline hitting Gavin Reed in stride for a 32 yard touchdown.
Adrian had over 300 yard rushing led by Gavin Reed’s 159 yards on the ground.  Many of those runs were aided by Anson Johnson’s 3 pancake blocks.
Defensively the Blackhawks were led by James Keating’s 16 tackles with Cameron Tallman talleying 13.  Dakota Harris had yet another interception. This one sealed the victory for Adrian late in the fourth quarter.
The team has another tough challenge this week when they host the El Dorado Springs Bulldogs in the last game of the regular season.  The Bulldogs are also 7-1 on the year riding a seven game winning streak after losing their season opener. Adrian will need another performance like last week to start the postseason on the right foot.

Comments:
We played really well tonight on both sides of the ball. Defensively, once we figured out what they were doing, they had trouble moving the ball. They only had a little over 50 yards rushing after the first quarter. We challenged our kids this week about effort and being physical, and they responded. It was a good win for us. We rushed for over 300 yards. Jasper is a good team, and it's possible we will see them again in the playoffs. I'm just really proud of how our kids stepped up and played. We have El Dorado next week, and it's not going to get any easier. We will have to be firing on all cylinders to compete with them.
