Blackhawk named to Missouri Scholars 100! Congrats, Amina!

Senior Amina Scaletty named to 2019 Missouri Scholars 100!

In the entire State of Missouri, 100 high school seniors were selected to the 2019 Missouri Scholars 100, a prestigious academic program sponsored by the Missouri Association of Secondary School Principals.  Adrian MS/HS Principal Abe Lewis announced that from the AHS Class of 2019, Amina Scaletty has been selected for her high academic achievements.  Adrian School Counselor Chancy Glynn has been a big part of Amina's academic journey.  She said, "Congratulations, Amina, on winning such a prestigious award!"

To qualify for the Missouri Scholars 100, the stringent criteria includes:  completion of the "academic decathalon", which reflects the academic strength of students; a 3.75+ GPA; ACT score of 29 minimum; top 10% of class; taking higher level classes in Math, Science, English and Foreign Language; excellent attendance; exemplary school citizenship; involvement in extracurricular activities.  Amina met all of these requirements.  Her high school activities are:  TSA, Speech, NHS, Student Council, TEAMS, Scholar Bowl and manager/filmer for football, basketball and wrestling.
Later this month, Amina will be attending an awards luncheon in Columbia where she will be recognized with the other 99 scholars. Amina said, "I am very excited about the upcoming luncheon. To know that all of my hard work has paid off means the world. My mom and my brother will be attending with me, as well as an administrator."

What's ahead for Amina?  She said, "After I graduate from Adrian, I am going to explore life in Chicago as I study at Northwestern University, which is just outside the city. I cannot put into words what this opportunity means to me, as NU is my top choice school. I love the meshing of backgrounds that takes place there and I know that while I pursue a degree in Political Science and Communications, I will have the tools necessary to continue to learn about life and the ability to dedicate myself to causes I'm passionate about."  With her high academic accomplishments, Amina has been awarded a generous amount of educational funds.  She said, "Northwestern was generous enough to give me enough grants and scholarships to nearly fully fund my education. I am awaiting the results of other local scholarships."  Amina has her sights on life beyond college, too. "Following this (NU), I plan to move to Washington D.C. to begin writing speeches for U.S. representatives, specifically for those whose causes I support."

Amina is a compassionate, hard-working young woman who is full of gratitude for people who have been there for her through the years and as she prepares to graduate from Adrian High School.  She said, "There are so many people to acknowledge, but the first is my mom. She has done nothing but push me to be my best, and it's because of her that I am the person I've become."  Teachers, past and present, have been influential in Amina's life.  She shared these sentiments:  "There have been so many teachers that have helped me over the years, but the three at Adrian deserving special thanks are Mr. Davis, Mrs. Coffelt, and Mrs. Adkins. All of them have pushed me in different ways, encouraging me to do my best. Mr. Davis introduced me back to football and to the incredible family that has given me. Without him, my high school career would have been much more disconnected from others and much less lively. Mrs. Coffelt encouraged my passion for public speaking and has given me a platform to develop these skills. Mrs. Adkins has always fostered my love of words, and has ensured that I am growing as a writer and a person. I also owe a huge gratitude to Mrs. Burchell, our former gifted teacher, for praising my curiosity and encouraging me to explore everything just a little bit deeper."  In addition, Amina said, "I also think that the Missouri Scholars Academy taught me so much about myself and the world, and for that, I am grateful."
Not only did Amina learn a great deal within the walls of Adrian R-III, she gained invaluable knowledge about a strong community like Adrian.  Amina expressed a heartfelt thank you to our town. "While those individuals (named above) deserve special praise, the close-knit community I've grown up with holds significant value. I've never known of a town more willing to step up for each other. In Adrian, I learned the greatest lesson a town could ever teach: Help and be helped. I've never known people so willing to sacrifice their time and energy for others. It's truly amazing. Members of our town know the value of a community, and that community is something I will look for as I leave our town. I will miss Adrian when I leave, but I know that I'll always carry these memories and lessons with me."

Amina, you have a bright future ahead of you, and Adrian will be cheering you on the whole time!  Mrs. Glynn said, "I  have enjoyed working with Amina and look forward to seeing what she accomplishes in the future."  We are looking forward to it, too!

CONGRATULATIONS, AMINA!
