A Blackhawk Graduates from Space Camp!

What an experience one Blackhawk has had this summer!  Briana Yoakum spent a week at Space Camp! How cool and very exciting! Her mother, Crystal, shared the following about Briana's experience:

Briana Yoakum of Adrian, Missouri recently attended Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, home of Space Camp®, Space Camp® Robotics™, Aviation Challenge® and NASA Marshall Space Flight Center’s Official Visitor Center.

The experience is a week-long educational program that promotes science, technology, engineering and math, (STEM) while teaching students hands-on activities and missions based on teamwork, leadership and problem-solving. It’s a great opportunity to examine real-world applications of STEM education.

Briana spent the week meeting kids from around the United States, all with the same aspirations, space exploration, astronomy and astronautics. Briana and her team participated in simulated space missions to the International Space Station (ISS). Once aboard the ISS, the crew conducted experiments and successfully completed an extra-vehicular activity, (EVA), and spacewalk.  Briana also completed the Multi-Axis Training.  The Multi- Axis Training simulates what it is like when an astronaut is in a tumble spin. It keeps your center of gravity in one place, while the rest of your body spins on multiple axises.

Students slept in quarters designed to resemble the ISS and completed classes daily to learn more about the history of Space Camp as well as previous space and current missions that the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has conducted. Briana has dreams of one day being part of a team that goes up to space to make new discoveries! She’s already working on her goal to attend another session in 2022!

Make those dreams come true, Briana! We're cheering you on in Adrian!  Adrian News Leader
