Monday, December 20th was a big day for Adrian Blackhawks senior Colton Bass. Bass had been selected to play in the Blue-Grey All-American Bowl played on the home turf of the NFL's Dallas Cowboys. The game featured many of the nation's top prospects from the class of 2022.
Many of the players are highly recruited prospects while the others participated in combines held at NFL stadiums and other training facilities. Players were selected from the outcomes of those combines. Players on the teams represented 22 states from the East and 17 States from the West. The selection committee chose Colton and the others from a pool of more than 6,750 recruits that competed at the regional combines.
More than 500 colleges nationwide viewed and scouted practices for the game and the game itself.
The All-American Bowl is a recruiting bonanza for college coaches all over the country.
Historically there have been high profile athletes participate in this game as well as athletes under the radar. To give you and idea about some of the talent to pass through this game in 2013 there was a high school senior quarterback out of Whitehouse, TX who had committed to Texas Tech. Fans may better recognize him today as Patrick Mahomes, quarterback for the Superbowl Champions, Kansas City Chiefs.
Colton had several family members and friends make the trip to Dallas to cheer him on. "I think it's a wonderful opportunity that I'm hoping to make the most of to help my future" said Colton before the game. "I'm excited for the challenge and fully confident in my abilities to play alongside them."
Colton's East squad fell to the West by the score of 27-35 but it was a fun experience for a kid from rural Missouri to compete at the national level.
